The Boston Red Sox lost to the Cincinnati Reds Wednesday night, losing 8-4 to finish the homestand at 3-3.

The Red Sox had turned the game over to the bullpen, with it being rested, having used the scheduled started Brayan Bello in the completion of the suspended game, on Wednesday afternoon, and an off-day scheduled for Thursday. All was well thru 6 innings, with the Red Sox up 3-0.

But in the 7th inning, Cincinnati scored 5 runs, led by Christian Encarnacion-Strand's grand slam and then the Reds tacked on 3 runs in the 8th inning to put the game away.

Brennan Bernardino started for the Red Sox and retired 5 of the 7 batters he faced in 1.2 innings. Jorge Alcala went 1.1 innings, allowing just 1 hit. Chris Murphy went 22 innings allowing 1 hit.

Greg Weissert was hit hard, allowing 4 hits and 5 runs in the 7th inning. Jordan Hicks was tagged for 3 runs allowing 3 hits and walking 1 retiring 2 in the 8th inning. Cooper Criswell, called up as the 27th player for the doubleheader finished the game, allowing 2 hits in 1.2 innings.

Wilyer Abrue hit a 2-run homer in the 6th inning, his 17th of the season. He had 2 homers in his last 5 games.

Trevor Story was 3-4 with a double.

Ceddanne Rafaela was 2-4 with a pair of doubles.

Romy  Gonzales was 1-3 with a double and 2 runs batted in.

Boston is now 43-45 and they are off on Thursday, July 3rd. They will open a 3-game series in Washington D.C. against the Nationals with a early start on the 4th of July. The pregame starts at 10:05 a.m. with the 1st pitch at 11:05 a.m. on AM 1370 WDEA.
