MDI Girls Defeat Ellsworth 54-40

After two upsets in the opening night of Tourney 2014, the Ellsworth Girls were looking to make it 3-3 as they took on the MDI Trojans. Ellsworth the number 11 seed had upset Oceanside, Tuesday, February 11th 50-47, and had lost twice during the regular season to MDI 73-32 on January 3rd and 71-41 on February 6th, but this was the Cross Insurance Center and anything could happen.

MDI took an 11-7 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter. Sarah Phelps scored the first 2 points for MDI, which were the first two points scored at the Cross Insurance Center for the Girl's High School Tournament! Hannah Shaw went 3-6 from the free throw line for the Trojans while Hailee Langley had 4 points.

In the 2nd Quarter MDI outscored Ellsworth 19-7 to take a 30-14 half time lead. Phelps added 7 points, including a 3-pointer for MDI, while Langley added 4 more points for Ellsworth.

In the 3rd Quarter, MDI increased their lead to 17 points, as they led 47-30. Sierra Myrick and Molly Carroll had 3-pointers for MDI, and Hannah Shaw added 7 points. For Ellsworth Morgan Card had 6 points, and Langley added 6 more points.

In the 4th Quarter Myrick added another 3-pointer and Emily Berry and Langely added 4 more points for the Eagles, who fought hard the entire game, but it wasn't enough as MDI won 54-40.

MDI was led by Hannah Shaw with 16 points and Sarah Phelps had 13 points. Hailey Langley had a game high 18 points for Ellsworth, while Morgan Card added 10 points. MDI was 10-16 from the free throw line while Ellsworth was 6-10.

MDI will now play the winner of the #2 Nokomis- #10John Bapst quarterfinal in the semi-finals on Wednesday, February 19th at 7:05 in the first girl's semifinal, in a game that will be heard on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio.
