The MDI Girl's Basketball team played their first game without senior standout Sierra Tapley, who injured her knee against Ellsworth, on Tuesday, January 5th, and they defeated John Bapst 50-47 in Bar Harbor on Thursday, January 7th.

John Bapst jumped out to an early lead, leading for most of the 1st Quarter, until MDI's Kelsey Shaw put MDI ahead 9-8 with 1:27 left in the quarter. MDI expanded their lead to 13-8 at the end of the 1st Quarter. Shaw had 9 points including a 3-pointer. Maddy Candage and Mariah Hamor each had 2 points for the Trojans.  Madi Higgins had 4 points, and Abby Legasse and Grace Philippon had 2 points each for the Crusaders.

MDI increased the lead to 10, 28-18 at the end of the 1st half. Shaw had 6 points for MDI, while Athena Laurendeau had 5 points, including a 3-pointer for MDI. Legasse had 4 points for John Bapst, while Crystal Bell had a 3-pointer.

John Bapst came roaring back in the 3rd Quarter to tie the game 36-36. John Bapst actually took the lead 36-34 as Maddi Higgins put the Crusaders ahead, before Candage tied it as the quarter ended. For John Bapst, Crysta Bell had 6 points, Higgins had 6 points, Legasse had 4 points including a 3-pointer.  For MDI, Shaw had 3 points, Laurendeau had another 3-pointer and Candage had 2 points.

The 4th Quarter was a back and forth affair. Bell sank 1-2 free throws to put Bapst ahead 37-36 and then a 3-pointer with 6:33 left to give the Crusaders a 40-36 lead. Mariah Hamor answered with a 3-pointer for MDI to Make the score 40-39 John Bapst with 6:30 left. Crystal Bell went 4-4 from the free throw line, and with 4:29 left, John Bapst led 44-39. Shaw's basket brought MDI within 3, 44-41, but then Legasse made 1-2 free throws to put John Bapst up 45-41 with 3:54 left. Shaw made a basket and was fouled, and when she sank the free throw, MDI was within one, 45-44 with 3:28 remaining. Bell then made 1-2 free throws for John Bapst and with 2:49 left, the Crusaders led 46-44.

With 2:07 left Keely McConomy scored to tie the score 46-46. Hannah Philippon made 1-2 free throws for the Crusaders, and with 1:36 left, John Bapst led 47-46. But Keely McConomy scored and Abbie Miller sank 2 free throws with 7.6 seconds left in the game, to give MDI the 50-47 victory.

MDI was led by Kelsey Shaw with a game high 23 points. Athena Laurendeau had 8 points and Keely McConomy had 6 points. The Trojans were 6-7 from the free throw line.

John Bapst was led by Crystal Bell with 18 points, while Abby Legasse had 11 points and Madi Higgins had 10 points. The Crusaders were 11-16 from the free throw line.

MDI is now 8-1 and will play host to Mattanawcook Academy on Saturday, January 9th at 4 PM.

John Bapst is 5-4 and plays host to Central on Saturday, January 9th.
