There was hunger in Maine before the pandemic hit. Now, it's real bad.

With thousands of Mainers facing job loss and decreasing wages because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many families wonder where their next meal is coming from.

Recently, free food distribution events at the Cross Insurance Center parking lot in Bangor along with one in Waldo County brought out many more people than organizers had ever envisioned.  Food pantries from Cherryfield to Bangor were already busy enough, serving literally hundreds of families per week.

This is where food drives become so very important.  Earlier this week we told you how Bar Harbor Band and Trust will be matching all food donations to downeast food pantries between November 9th and 13th.  Today, we inform you of another big food gathering event for those in need.

The annual Ellsworth Rotary Food Drive for the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Ellsworth will take place on Saturday, November 21st, between 9 and 2 at the Ellsworth Hannaford in the Maine Coast Mall parking lot.

This is a HUGE event for hungry families in downeast Maine.

You'll find Ellsworth Rotarians standing by the front doors of Hannaford that day.  Please, fill up their grocery carts with non-perishable food donations.  Yes, they'll gladly accept cash as well, which actually goes much further than buying the food within the store when places like Loaves and Fishes use it to purchase food in bulk from the Good Shepard Food Bank of Maine.

We'll be making a donation that Saturday and we hope that you are able to as well.  Thank you.
