Ellsworth Emergency Crews Respond to Localized Chemical Odor at Hampton Inn on Tuesday

On Tuesday afternoon, June 30, 2026, the Ellsworth Fire Department, along with local public safety partners, responded to a localized hazardous materials incident at the Hampton Inn located at 4 Downeast Highway.

First responders arrived on scene at approximately 13:25 p.m.  following a commercial fire alarm activation. Prior to the fire department's arrival, the building was already being safely evacuated by hotel staff and guests as a standard precaution.

Emergency personnel identified a localized chemical reaction involving pool maintenance products in the hotel's pool room, which created a distinct chlorine odor on the 1st floor. Fire crews utilized mechanical ventilation fans to safely clear the airborne vapors from the structure and performed routine air monitoring to ensure the building was safe.

Out of an abundance of caution, medical personnel evaluated occupants on scene. 2 individuals declined transport, and 1 civilian was transported to a regional medical facility for further evaluation.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) responded to the scene to assist with the standard containment and removal of the maintenance materials. By 6:37 p.m., atmospheric levels inside the building had completely returned to normal, all materials were safely removed from the property, and emergency crews cleared the scene.
