1953 — Rocky Marciano scored a technical knockout of Roland LaStarza in the 11th round of their fight at the Polo Grounds in New York to retain the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)
1957 — The Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-0, in the last game ever at Ebbets Field. (More info.)
1988 — American Jackie Joyner-Kersee set a world record of 7,291 points to win the gold medal in the heptathlon at the Summer Olympics in Seoul. (More info.)
