MDI Boys Beat Old Town 51-45

The MDI Boys opened up the 2013-14 season with a victory over the Old Town Coyotes at Bernard Parady Gymnasium in Bar Harbor on Saturday afternoon, December 7th.

When Jon Phelps hit a three point shot with 4:07 left in the 1st Quarter, the Trojans led 11-2 causing Old Town to call a timeout. Old Town made some defensive changes, going to a trapping defense, and caused MDI problems. Old Town tied the score 22-22 with two minutes left in the half, and actually took a 24-23 lead at the half, as they outscored MDI 13-5.

MDI came out firing in the 3rd Quarter. Jon Phelps scored five unanswered points for MDI, and with 7:37 left in the 3rd Quarter, MDI led 28-24. Old Town's Mitchell Cole scored 4 points and it was 28-28 with 3:35 left in the 3rd Quarter. Phelps then scored two three pointers as well as a basket, scoring all of MDI's points in the 3rd Quarter, and MDI outscored Old Town 13-4 and they led 36-28 after three quarters.

Phelps went 2-2 from the free throw line and with 3:25 remaining in the game MDI led 44-41. Freshman Aaron Snurkowski went 1-2 from the free throw line and with 1:31 left in the game MDI led 47-41. The final score was 51-45 MDI.

MDI was led by Jon Phelps with a game high 25 points, including 4 3-pointers.Andrew Davis had 8 points. Scoring their first varsity points were Ryan Littlefield 2 points and Snurkowski 1 point. MDI went 12-22 from the free throw line.

Old Town was led by Adam Richardson with 9 points. Zack Bartlett, Eric Hoogterp and Nick Cowan all had 8 points for the Coyotes. Garvey Melmed had 2 3-pointers for Old Town. Old Town went 3-16 from the free throw line.

MDI (1-0) next plays at home on Wednesday, December 11th when they play host to Foxcroft Academy (1-0). That game will be on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio with the pregame starting at 6:40 and the tip-off at 7 PM. Old Town plays at the Cross Center on Thursday, December 12th against John Bapst (0-1) at 7 PM.
