If you are going thru downtown Ellsworth during the month of April take a moment and look up! You'll see Ellsworth student-designed flags flying during the month of April, 2026. They are there through a collaborative effort between the Ellsworth School Department's art students and the City of Ellsworth.

The project brought together art students from both the middle and high schools to design and paint unique flags centered on Earth Day themes of sustainability and environmental conservation, as well as local pride. 40 flags in total were created and given to the City of Ellsworth. Supported by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, which provided the materials, the initiative aims to highlight student creativity while promoting ecological awareness.

The flags were installed by the City’s Ground Maintenance team and will remain on display throughout the month of April until the city replaces them with American flags for their Memorial Day celebration.

“This was a great team effort from start to finish,” says the city’s Parks and Recreation Director Roddy Ehrlenbach. “Our Parks and Recreation crew was proud to help bring the students’ designs to life by getting the flags up across the city. It’s a simple thing, but it makes a big impact — and it’s something our team really enjoys being part of.”

The flags will stay up thru the month of April and will be replace with American flags on May 1st.
