
Troy Bires Named Ellsworth’s New Police Chief
Ellsworth City Manager Charlie Pearce appointed Acting Chief Troy Bires to become Ellsworth's new Police Chief on Monday, July 29th. The appointment is pending confirmation by the Ellsworth City Council.
Bires has worked in law enforcement for over 35 years and for the City of Ellsworth since 1990. He was appointed Interim Chief on March 11th, 2024 after the City Council fired former Chief Glenn Moshier.
Bires started in Ellsworth as a Captain and was appointed Deputy Chief on April 22, 2021
He worked as an undercover officer with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and was an Assistant Supervisor in that agency.
According to the City of Ellsworth's press release in his role as Deputy Chief of Police, Chief Bires was instrumental in achieving accreditation for his department, a testament to his commitment to excellence and adherence to rigorous standards. He has also been a driving force behind modernizing police operations, ensuring low turnover rates, maintaining low crime rates, and investing in cutting-edge technology and training for his officers.
In his tenure as Interim Police Chief in Ellsworth, Chief Bires has excelled in every capacity, earning the confidence of city officials and the community alike. His vision for the future of the Ellsworth Police Department includes further advancements in crime prevention, addressing the challenges of a growing city, maintaining high staff morale, and tackling pressing issues such as mental health, addiction, and homelessness.
