
Ellsworth School Department’s Personal Electronic Device Policy for the 2026-27 School Year
With the recent passage of the "Bell-to Bell No Cell" Law, the Ellsworth School Department has adopted the following policy for the 2026-27 School Year.
Student use of personal electronic devices is prohibited from the 1st morning bell until the final dismissal bell. This includes cell-phones, smart-watches, personal tablets/computers and other devices with or without internet or cellular capability.
Ellsworth Schools have purchased personal electronic pouches. Students will need to place their phones and devices in the pouches before they arrive at school or inside the door when they arrive.
- Pouches may be unlocked at designated magnets located by school exits upon dismissal.
- Pouches are signal blocking
- If a student stays after school for academic/behavioral purposes, devices stay in pouch for the duration of the event.
Grades PK-5
For students in Pre-K through Grade 5 at Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School
- Student personal electronic devices are prohibited - either kept at home, or turned off upon arrival and left in student bags or lockers.
- Cell phones, smart watches and other personal electronic devices may only be used after dismissal
- All students will use school issued devices during the school day.
Grades 6-12 and HCTC Students
For students in Grades 6-12 at Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School, Ellsworth High School and Hancock County Technical Center
- Each student in Grades 6-12 will be issued an Ellsworth School Department pouch for their devices.
- Personal electronic devices will be turned off and placed in the pouches for the school day - from arrival through dismissal. Pouches will be unlocked at dismissal
- HCTC students will place their devices in the pouch for the duration they are in the building.
- All students will use school issued devices.
Nurse/Contact
Personal electronic devices are prohibited from the nurse's office and the School Based Health Clinic.
- Nurses will still be able to communicate with families as needed.
- Calling home when sick should occur in the main office with a school phone.

In the event of a school emergency, the school/district will communicate with parents as promptly as possible in accordance with the school unit’s Health and Safety and Emergency Management Plan.
