No Tricks and All Treats for MDI as Trojans Beat Morse 32-3 on Halloween [PHOTOS]
The #3 MDI Trojans beat the #2 Morse Shipbuilders 32-3 in Bath on Halloween night, in a Northern Maine Large School 8-Man Football Semifinal and will now play #1 Camden Hills on Saturday, November 4th at 1 p.m. in the Regional Finals in Rockport.
Tuesday night MDI won the coin-toss and elected to defer, getting the ball 1st in the 2nd Half.
MDI kicked off and Morse returned the ball to their own 43 yard line. The Shipbuilders were able to move the ball down the field until MDI's defense stiffened forcing Morse to try a field goal from around 20 yards out. Chase Roth-Wells drilled the ball through the uprights, and with 7:23 left in the 1st Quarter, Morse led 3-0.
MDI took over on their own 46 yard line, and went on a long drive eating up nearly 9 minutes before turning the ball over on downs. Morse took over on their own 10 yard line, with 10:22 left in the 1st Half.
Morse promptly had to punt, and with 8:03 left in the 1st Half, MDI had the ball on their own 48 yard lien. The Trojans were forced to punt, pinning the Shipbuilders at their own 7 yard line.
A high snap over the Quarterback's head resulted in a safety, as Morse recovered the ball in the end zone. With 4:17 left in the 1st Half, Morse led 3-2.
Morse kicked off and MDI returned the ball to the Morse 32 yard line. It took just 23 seconds and MDI was in the end zone, as Spencer Laurendeau ran the ball in from 2 yards out. The 2-point conversion was no good, and with 3:47 remaining in the 1st Half, MDI led 8-3.
Morse was then forced to turn the ball over on downs, with MDI taking over on the Morse 35 yard line with 1:55 left in the 1st Half.
The Trojans were in the end zone again on a flea-flicker as Laurendeau pitched the ball to Jacob Shields who then lofted a 40 yard pass to a wide-open Jarron Biekert for a touchdown.. The 2-point conversion was good, and MDI led 16-3 with 18.1 seconds in the 1st Half.
MDI led 16-3, before a 20-minute halftime, which allowed for the distribution of candy to children in costume!
MDI took over at their own 35 yard line to start the 2nd Half, but proceeded to fumble the ball, giving Morse the ball at their own 29 yard line with 8:22 left in the 3rd Quarter.
But MDI's defensive secondary picked off the Morse Quarterback, taking over at their own 4 yard line with 3:53 left in the 3rd Quarter.
MDI was able to march the ball down the field, scoring with 7:57 left in the game, on Laurendeau's 2 yard run. The 2-point conversion was good, and MDI led 24-3..
Morse was then picked off again, with MDI taking over on their own 48 yard line with 6:39 left to go in the game. It took over 10 seconds and the Trojans were in the end zone for the final time, Freshman Lincoln Gray ran in from 52 yards out, and with the 2-point conversion, MDI led 32-3.
That was the final score.
MDI will play Camden Hills in Rockland on Saturday, November 4th. Camden Hills beat Waterville in the other semifinal 44-0. MDI and Camden Hills met back on September 15th with the Windjammers beating the Trojans in Rockport, 28-16.
