Oil Soaked Rags Cause Early Morning Ellsworth Fire Monday
The Ellsworth Fire Department was toned out early Monday morning, June 30th to fight a fully involved residential fire at 14 Liberty Street. The call came in at 4:49 a.m.
Upon arrival, Ellsworth Fire Department personnel confirmed a working fire and immediately initiated a defensive operation. Automatic aid was requested and received from several neighboring departments, including Mariaville, Hancock, Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor, Orland, Trenton, Lamoine, and Northern Light Ambulance,.
Fire crews initially faced challenges with a power surge that caused arcing across the driveway, prompting immediate coordination with Versant Power to ensure the power was safely disconnected. After addressing the electrical hazard, firefighters transitioned to an offensive strategy, deploying interior crews to directly combat the fire.
The residence was under renovation and confirmed unoccupied.
The fire was declared under control at 6:04 AM. All out declared at 8:04 am.
The Ellsworth Fire Department wants to remind residents and businesses about the critical importance of properly storing and disposing of oil-soaked rags to prevent spontaneous combustion and fires.
Oil-soaked rags, particularly those used with stains, varnishes, linseed oil, or other combustible materials, can generate heat as the oil dries and oxidizes. If this heat cannot dissipate, it can quickly build to a point where the rag ignites on its own – a phenomenon known as spontaneous combustion.
To ensure the safety of your home, business, and community, please follow these essential guidelines for storing and disposing of oil-soaked rags:
- Soak Immediately: As soon as you are finished using an oil-soaked rag, completely submerge it in water. This will stop the oxidation process and prevent heat buildup.
- Seal in an Airtight Container: After soaking, place the water-soaked rags in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. This container should be specifically designed for combustible materials, if possible.
- Store Outdoors and Away from Structures: Store the sealed container outdoors, away from any buildings, combustible materials, or heat sources. A well-ventilated area is ideal.
