Maine Fisherman Catches Lobster Split In Two Colors

A Maine fisherman has pulled up what people are already calling a “Halloween lobster” near Matinicus and once you see the picture, you’ll understand why.

Blaine Burgess shared the photo in the Maine Wildlife Facebook Group, saying the lobster was caught near Matinicus.

He also told me that Captain Bobby Maloney of Cushing was at the helm, and Blaine was his sternman aboard the Cheryl Lynn II when they made the shockingly cool catch.

And this isn’t just a lobster with an unusual spot or two.

This one is split almost perfectly down the middle. One side is dark, while the other is that classic bright red-orange color. Blaine said he’s excited to see how much interest the lobster has gotten and honestly, we get it. This is one seriously cool catch.

It genuinely looks like somebody dressed a lobster up for Halloween.

And the wildest part? Split-colored lobsters are incredibly rare. Estimates put the odds at around one in 50 million.

Blaine went on to say,

"Really just couldn’t believe that it happened to us out of all the people who go out there. We just stood there looking at each other for a second trying to wrap our head around the situation, and what to do next!"

So how does a lobster end up looking like this?

Researchers say split coloration can happen because of unusual genetics very early in development, including situations involving two sets of genetic information.

And Maine has seen some seriously unusual lobsters over the years blue, yellow, calico, white and other rare color variations.

In fact, a split-colored lobster that recently came through Maine was donated to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute for educational purposes.

But THIS one showing up near Matinicus right around Halloween?

Come on. It's a sign.

Nature was like, “Let me make this one festive.”
