He was the one of the longest running high school football coaches in the state, on Tuesday Mark Hackett ended that run announcing his resignation from Bangor.Hackett has been a coach at Bangor High School in several sports for 31 years including the last 14 as their head football coach. He led his teams to four state championship games, and came away with the gold ball in 2001. Hackett compiled an overall record of 108-39 including a 5-3 record this season which ended with a loss to Cheverus in the semifinals.

Both Hackett and Athletic Director Steve Vanidestine pointed out that the decision was not influenced by an end of the season incident in which several players were suspended for the final regular season game. Hackett will remain at the school in his role as Vocational, Co-op and Testing Director.

Vanidestine says the school will now look for Hackett's replacement and consider internal as well as external candidates.
