This is an important message, that is being shared by numerous Fire Departments in Downeast Maine!

This was written by the Mount Desert Fire Department but could have well been written by any Fire Department in Downeast Maine!

"Friends – please help us spread the word. The number of our on-call firefighters is dwindling drastically, and without more members of our community stepping up and answering the call, we will soon be reaching critical staffing levels.

On-call firefighters are paid per call members of the department that respond to incidents when available, 24/7. Like most surrounding towns, Mount Desert Fire Department relies heavily on its volunteers, saving their communities thousands of dollars every year.

Volunteer firefighters come from all walks of life - male, female, teachers, business owners, retirees, mothers, fathers, students, and more. And all the training is provided for. We will even pay for you to attend.

We are mostly in need of those who want to be fully certified structural firefighters, but can also use anyone interested in learning to drive and operate the fire trucks, perform traffic control at emergency scenes, filling air bottles for our interior firefighters, etc. So, what are you waiting for? Are you ready to make a difference? Are you ready to join our team? Your community needs you. We need you!".

Kudos to the Southwest Harbor Fire Department for sharing this video. It gives you a good idea what it takes to be a firefighter!
