In one of the most interestingly refereed basketball game that I have seen all season long, the Calais Boys tipped Ellsworth 62-60 in overtime on Saturday, January 18th at Katsiaficas Gymnasium in Ellsworth.

Calais jumped out to a 12-11 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter. Cordell Hold had 7 points for Calais, including a 3-pointer and PJ Descoteaux added a 3-pointer. Griffin Nightingale added 4 points for Ellsworth, and Bruce St. Peter went 3-4 from the free throw line.

In the 2nd Quarter, Ellsworth outscored Calais 14-8 to take a 25-20 lead at the half. Bryce Harmon added 8 points in the 2nd Quarter, including 2 3-pointers, and Steven Mahon added a 3-pointer for the Eagles. For Calais, Nathan Newell added a 3-pointer and Hold added 3 more points for the Blue Devils.

Ellsworth increased their lead to 7 points at the end of the 3rd Quarter, as they led Calais 43-36. Nick Bagley added 7 points for Ellsworth, including a 3-pointer. Nightingale added a 3-pointer for Ellsworth. Calais' Newell added 7 points, including 2 3-pointers.

In the 4th Quarter, Calais outscored Ellsworth 17-12, to tie the score at 53-53 at the end of regulation. Nathan Newell added 6 points, including going 4-7 from the free throw line. Ellsworth went 6-9 from the free throw line in the 4th Quarter, as Griffin Nightgale and Nick Bagley each went 3-3 from the free throw line. Ellsworth's Steven Mahon gave Ellsworth the lead 53-52 with 26 left, and Calais' Andre Paul went 1-5 from the free throw line, but the one free throw he sank tied the game 53-53.

Ellsworth took an early lead in the overtime, as Nick Bagley swished a 3-pointer. It was tied at 60-60 in overtime when Kyle Johnson stole the ball from Steven Mahon with less than 1 second left, and his shot went in, to give Calais the 62-60 win. Johnson had 6 points in the overtime period for the Blue Devils.

For the game,Johnson had a game high 18 points, while Newell had 16 points. Calais ended up 11-22 from the free throw line. Newell had 3 3-pointers, while Paul, Johnson and Descoteaux each had 1 3-pointer. Nick Bagley had 17 points for Ellsworth, including 2 3-pointers. Griffin Nightingale had 12 points, and 1 3-pointer for Ellsworth, and Bryce Harmon had 2 3-pointers, while Steven Mahon added 1 3-pointer.. Ellsworth was 18-25 from the free throw line.

Post game there was a scuffle between Calais and Ellsworth fans.

Ellsworth falls to 5-6 on the season and hosts Foxcroft on Wednesday, January 22nd at 7 PM in a game that will be heard on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio. Calais improves to 8-3 and next plays at Lee Academy on Monday, January 21st.
