
2nd Annual Schoodic Food Pantry Chinese Auction – July 19
You're invited to attend and participate in the 2nd Annual Schoodic Food Pantry Chinese Auction which will be held on Saturday, July 19th from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Gouldsboro Recreation Center, located at 679 Pond Road, in Gouldsboro.
Last year, at the 1st Annual Schoodic Food Pantry Chinese Auction, through the generosity of the participants, the Pantry was able to raise over $16.000 to help stock the shelves, and feed the community.
This year, there are 360 items to bid on, from goods and services to gift certificates and cards worth over $27.000 There will also be a 50-50 raffle, a delicious, dessert bar donated by Corea Catering and other volunteers.
The Pantry is open Tuesday and Friday morning, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and is located at 829 US Route 1 in Gouldsboro. It began two and a half years ago with 35 families receiving assistance. Today, the pantry serves over 1100 individuals and over 450 families per month. Of that total, over 300 are children under the age of 18, over 30 are veterans and over 370 are individuals over the the age of 50. The Pantry's customers consumer between 2500 and 3000 pounds of non-perishable food and fresh fruit and vegetables each week.
Food insecurity is an extreme problem in Downeast Maine. The Schoodic Food Pantry serves individuals from 20 towns, ranging from Ellsworth to Machias and there are no income guidelines as they and the all-volunteer organization help to combat food insecurity in Downeast Maine.
