MDI Boys Defeat John Bapst

The MDI Boys got their first taste of the Cross Insurance Center, and it proved to be a good one, as the Trojans defeated the John Bapst Crusaders 50-40 on Tuesday, December 30th in a 1:30 matinee match-up.

The answer to a MDI trivia question will be Steven Hanscom, as he scored the Trojan's first basket at the Cross Insurance Center. Hanscom had 6 points in the 1st Quarter to lead the Trojans to a 12-6 lead.

It was 19-8 and the Trojans were on a 7-2 run with 4:59 remaining in the 1st Half. Jon Phelps drained a 3-pointer and the Trojans were up 24-12 with 2:50 remaining in the 1st Half. The Trojans would score 4 more points, and led at the Half 28-12. MDI which had some foul difficulty in the games against Caribou and Presque Isle only committed 3 fouls in the 1st Half.

In the 3rd Quarter MDI increased their lead to 35-14 when Abe Philbrook hit a 3-pointer with 6:05 left. The Trojans would take a 24 point in the 3rd Quarter, but then John Bapst came charging back. Sam Brown hit a 3-pointer and had 9 points in the quarter. Austin Cyr had 3 baskets and Cody Lyons hit a 3-pointer for John Bapst, and Bapst cut the MDI lead to 7 at the end of the 3rd Quarter as the Trojans led 37-30.

John Bapst would cut the lead to 6 in the 4th Quarter but couldn't get any closer. With 1:55 left in the game Jon Phelps scored for MDI making it 46-37. Birthday boy Andrew Davis chipped in with 2, and the Lyons hit a 3-pointer to answer for Bapst, and with 50.6 seconds left, MDI was up 48-40. John Phelps went 1-2 from the free throw line with 35.8 seconds left and then with 11.6 seconds left, Phelps went 1-2 again from the free throw line and MDI was the winner 50-40.

MDI was led by John Phelp (2 3-pointers) and Andrew Davis with 13 points each. Steven Hanscom had 10 points for the Trojans. Abe Philbrook and Taner Bickford had a 3-pointer apiece for MDI.

John Bapst was led by Sam Brown with 11 points including 1 3-pointer. Colby Kohn had 10 points and Cody Lyons had 3 3-pointers for 9 points for John Bapst. The Crusaders did not get to the free throw line during the game.

The MDI Trojans play the Ellsworth Eagles, Saturday January 4th in Ellsworth next, at Katsiaficas Gymnasium at 7 PM. That game will be heard on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio. MDI is 5-2, and Ellsworth is 4-2.

John Bapst remains winless on the season, at 0-6 and will next play on Monday, January 6th, when they will play host to the Foxcroft Academy Ponies at 7 PM at the Cross Insurance Center.
