Maine's top law enforcement and fire officials are looking into a situation that occured in Trenton on the Oak Point Road over the weekend.

According to the Department of Public Safety, Maine State Police were called to a residence in that area just after 9:30 Saturday morning. What started as a domestic violence quickly escalated to a much more alarming situation, when it was discovered one of the people involved had access to explosives. Other emergency agencies were quickly activated to ensure everyone's safety, including the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Bar Harbor Police Department, and local fire and rescue agencies. At that point, the Maine State Bomb Squad was also called in out to help, along with the Maine State Fire Marshal's Office.

"While responding, Troopers learned the male suspect had left the residence and may be in possession of hazardous explosive items. Troopers later located the suspect’s vehicle at his residence on Bar Harbor Road in Trenton and secured the scene. During the investigation, several improvised explosive devices and materials to manufacture them were located and rendered safe by the Maine State Police Bomb Squad."

Authorities were able to locate the suspect, 43-year-old Anthony Nickerson, who lives in Trenton. Nickerson was arrested without incident. He will face multiple criminal charges including Arson, Criminal Use of Explosives and Domestic Violence. He was also not supposed to have any firearms, and will face a charge of Possession of Firearms by a Prohibited Person.

Thankfully, the victim was uninjured during the ordeal.

Nickerson was charged with Domestic Violence Assault, Possession of Firearms by a Prohibited Person, Arson, and Criminal Use of Explosives. The investigation remains ongoing. The Maine State Police was assisted by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Bar Harbor Police Department, and local fire and rescue agencies.
