Hungry Children Wanted on MDI

Earlier this week we told you about sites where children can receive free meals this summer. It's an issue given that so many children receive free or reduced meals (breakfast and lunch) during the school year, and with school out for summer, families can no longer take advantage of these programs. There are so many families that need this help, and it's a problem, especially on Mount Desert Island.

Jen Sargent, the owner of Love of A Mother Child Care Center in Southwest Harbor and a Bar Harbor resident is committed to fighting child hunger this summer, with your help.

She is offering a FREE brown bag lunch to children on MDI who qualify for free or discounted lunch programs in school, and to children of families who are in genuine need of a meal.

Brown bags will offer a CHOICE of sandwiches to include

• Peanut butter and strawberry jelly
• Chicken Salad
• Ham and Cheese
• Turkey and Cheese

All brown bags will include a piece of fruit (banana, apple or orange), and chips or a granola bar.

Brown bags will be offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. They need to be requested no later than 7PM the night prior to pickup. Pickup will be at 10 Degregoire Park Road in Bar Harbor between 7:30-8AM and at Love of a Mother's Childcare Center in Southwest Harbor between 8:30-9AM at 11 Seal Cove Road in Southwest Harbor.

Now naturally this is a big undertaking. If you would like to donate cash  via a credit card for the food, you can do so by clicking HERE, Food donations may also be dropped off at the pickup locations but please call Jen and make sure she needs what you want to drop off. Obviously, fruits and meats are perishable, so you don't want to drop off those if she has what she needs for that period.

With your help, by spreading word of this program, and by donations, hopefully there won't be as many children who are food insecure this summer on MDI!

Remember too that Open Table MDI offers a free meal on Tuesday nights, from 4-7 PM at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church on Mount Desert Street. This year round program offers entertainment during this time too!
