It's the middle of August, and summer seems to be winding down! High School practices began on Monday August 13th! We continue to try and keep a list of FREE, family friendly, events that are going on in the Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island area, which will be published weekly on the WDEA website. Here is our list for the week August 13th-19th .

While this is not a comprehensive list, it's what I have been able to find by talking to the Chambers of Commerce, Public Libraries and events that I'm generally aware of. If you would like to have your FREE event listed, please email it to me in advance at chris.popper@townsquaremedia.com

Monday August 13th
Southwest Harbor - 10AM-11AM Southwest Public Library - Early Elementary Story Time - A new summer story time for early-elementary-aged kids! Parents welcome, too.

Northeast Harbor - 10:30AM Northeast Harbor Public Library -The Scientist Elli Show - "Scientist Elli" is a biologist and artist on MDI. She has been working at the MDI Biological Lab since 2013. She has been involved in the Maine State Science Fair, MDIBL's Family Science Night and the Barn Arts Collective performances. Science is like magic but cooler because it's REAL. Scientist Elli wants to show you some fun and exciting experiments that can help you learn about the world around you. Make elephant toothpaste, learn a dance from spaghetti, meet some very tiny animals and more!

Bar Harbor - Town Band Concert 8PM Bandstand - Village Green (Lasts 1 hour)

Tuesday August 14th
Ellsworth 2PM - Ellsworth Public Library - Caregiver's Support Group. Meet for coffee, conversation, education and support with Easter Area Agency on Aging .Meet in the Riverview Room.

Bar Harbor - 4-7PM. Free Community Meal with entertainment. Prepared by Open Table MDI. Served at Bar Harbor Congregational Church on Mount Desert Street.

Southwest Harbor- 5:30-7PM Southwest Harbor Public Library ."Fact and Fiction: The Fire of '47" Suspense novelist Matty Dalrymple and MDI researcher Sean Cox will discuss "Fact and Fiction: The Fire of '47”

Ellsworth - Knowlton Park 6:30-7:30PM "Healthy Living Revolution" - Meet reigning "Miss Maine USA" Marina Gray. Hear her inspiring journey of perseverance  and courage through service in the US Army and onto the Miss USA Pageant. You also get healthy tips to get your kids and you ready for back to school, from snacks to sleep.

Wednesday August 15th
Southwest Harbor -10AM-10:45AM Southwest Harbor Public Library Toddler Storytime Sing-A-Long with Paul Kaplan. (Designed ages 3-5 but all welcome.)

Southwest Harbor - 4:30-6PM Southwest Harbor Public Library - Reception for The North End of Echo Lake Exhibit -An exhibit celebrating the work of a special community of writers, painters, poets, printmakers, and photographers at the north end of Echo Lake opened at the Southwest Harbor Public Library on August 7. A reception is planned this evening.

Ellsworth - 6PM Ellsworth Public Library. Mad Science is coming to the Ellsworth Public Library with the "Sounds Like Science" Show! Pitch, Frequency, Vibrations, Oh my!  Meet the Mad Science Maestro in this ear pleasing show about the science of sounds!  Open your ears and your eyes to be perplexed as you hear light, explore sound as it travels through solids, liquids, and gases, and listen to the beautiful tones of Mad Science resonance tubes.  Take a trip through the jungle as they recreate the sounds of several animals.  Find out how hot sound can be as it rises out of thei Singing Pipe.  After some thunderous applause, the Mad Science Conductor will need your help to recreate an indoor thunder storm. This Mad Science show is sure to please everyone and inspire more imaginative learning in all of our audience members!

Thursday August 16th
Ellsworth - 6PM Ellsworth Public Library - The Ellsworth Chess Club meets every Thursday evening at the Ellsworth Public Library. New members are welcome.

Ellsworth 6-7PM - Ellsworth Public Library - Author Visit - Vernita Leins. Maine author Vernita Leins will speak about her recent book Josie's Story about her service dog Josie. Josie's Story is a firsthand account of a yellow lab adopted from a rescue group who became a support dog. Josie and Leins share their successes and struggles in training, communication and working as a team. In the final three chapters, Leins discusses the difference between a therapy dog and service dog. She also shares important information about consistency and responsible dog parenting so any family can have a dog as sweet and well-mannered as Josie. Books will be available for purchase and signing

Southwest Harbor 6:30 PM. Southwest Harbor Public Library - The Music of Shakespeare. The Southwest Harbor Public Library’s Family Concert Series continues with a concert version of the original music written for Shakespeare by the Sea by the Barn Arts Collective’s Andrew Lynch and Brittany Parker

Northeast Harbor - Free Movie by the Marina (Approximately 7:36 PM) "Early Man" Rated PG

Ellsworth - Free Movie in Knowlton Park at Sunset (Approximately 7:38 PM) "Isle of Dogs" Rated PG

Friday August 17th
Southwest Harbor - 10AM-11AM Southwest Harbor Public Library - Baby Storytime Susan Michalski and Amanda Crafts welcome babies with songs, rhymes, and short stories. Baby Storytime is designed especially for babies under two years. Siblings are welcome

Ellsworth - Waterfront Concert Series at Ellsworth's Union River Harbor Park 6PM- "The Fox and the Hound" playing Roots/American music

Saturday August 18th
Southwest Harbor - 1:30PM Southwest Harbor Public Library. Charles Kowalski, author of Mind Virus, will discuss his latest book, The Devil’s Son, a political thriller.

Ellsworth - Knowlton Park's Splash Pad is the place to cool off in Ellsworth!

The restroom facilities are open from 8AM to 9 PM. The changing rooms at Knowlton Park are open as well. Water in the Splash Pad will operate between 10AM and 8PM, everyday, unless the temperature falls below 65, which it will then automatically shut off until the temperature rises again.

Looking for somewhere that's kid friendly and FREE in Bar Harbor to cool off? The place to go is the Glen Mary Wading Pool! The Pool has a maximum depth of 2 feet and is open daily from 10AM to 8 PM. There is no lifeguard on duty, and children under 10 need to be accompanied by someone 14 and over. Pets are not allowed in the fenced in area. Food and beverage is allowed but not in the water. There are changing facilities

The Glen Mary Wading Pool is located at 11 Waldren Road. The easiest way to get there is to go on Park Street and go past the YMCA and cross Ledgelawn Avenue. At the end of the road turn right onto Glen Mary Road. At the end of the road turn left onto Waldren Road.
