Acadia National Park officials say the bodies of two hikers were recovered from Dorr Mountain on Saturday.

UPDATE: Park officials have identified the two hikers as 28-year-old Wayne Beckford and 30-year-old Kassandra Caceres of Rutland, Massachusetts.

The discovery was the result of a search that started when the couple's family members reported them missing on Friday. The 28-year-old man and 30-year-old woman were from Rutland, Massachusetts. Officials say they had arrived in Bar Harbor on Tuesday and were last heard from on Thursday at around noon. Family members say the woman had been interested in hiking Cadillac Mountain and discussed it with them during a cell phone conversation. When the couple did not check out of their hotel as scheduled on Friday afternoon or return to their vehicle, their family members became concerned.

A search was launched on Friday evening and involved a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from Cape Cod, equipped with thermal imaging technology, which searched for heat signatures on the north and east sides of Dorr and Cadillac Mountains without success. A ground search, with 15 volunteers and additional park staff, began the next day in areas of high probability, and their bodies were discovered late Saturday morning. Park officials say it appears they fell about 100 feet along ice covered cliff bands on Dorr Mountain. Park rangers worked with volunteers from Mount Desert Island Search and Rescue and a helicopter from the Maine Forest Service to recover the couples' bodies.

The incident is under investigation by National Park Service Rangers and Maine State Police, with assistance from the Bar Harbor Police Department.
