Tokyo was chosen as the site of the 2020 Summer Olympics, besting Madrid and Istanbul in voting by the International Olympic Committee on Saturday, September 7th. Tokyo previously hosted the Summer Olympics in 1964.

The final vote was Tokyo 60, Istanbul 36 after Madrid had been eliminated in a previous vote. Tokyo was awarded the 2020 Olympics despite concerns that the Fukushima Nuclear Plant was spewing radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean and that gas levels were rising daily. The Fukushima Plant is 140 miles away from Tokyo.
