MDI Falls in Finals 51-38 [Recap/Stats/Photos]
The MDI Boys Basketball Team's quest to return to the State Championship Gold Ball game came 1 game short, as the Trojans lost to Hermon 51-38 in the Northern Maine Championship game at the Cross Insurance Center on Saturday, February 24th.
Hermon led 6-4 at the end of the 1st Quarter as Keenen Marseille had 4 points and Jacob Godfrey 2 points for the Hawks. For MDI Drew Shea scored all of MDI's 4 points.
In the 2nd Quarter Hermon outscored MDI 18-10 to take a 24-14 lead at the end of the 1st Half. In the 2nd Quarter Cody Hawes scored 10 points for Hermon including 2 3-pointers. Garrett Trask and Joel Bergeron each drained a 3-pointer and Marseille had 2 points. For MDI Finn McConomy and Derek Collin each had a 3-pointer and Shea and Lee chipped in with 2 points each.
In the 3rd Quarter, Hermon outscored MDI 16-4 to increase their lead to 22 points at the end of the 3rd Quarter 40-18. Hermon's Trask hit 2 3-pointers, Cody Hawes added 5 points including his 3rd 3-pointer of the game. Isaac Varney had 4 points and Godfrey went 1-2 from the free throw line. For MDI Derek Collin and Drew Shea each had baskets.
In the 4th Quarter MDI came alive! Andrew Phelps who had been scoreless scored 10 points with 2 3-pointers. Finn McConomy had 6 points with a 3-pointer, and Owen Mild 4 points. The Trojans scored 20 points, doubling their score. The problem was they had dug themselves too big of a hole. They were able to cut the 22 point lead down to 9, but Hermon made their free throws when MDI was forced to foul. Hermon went 9-13 from the free throw line. Varney went 6-6 from the line, Traske 2-3, Cody Hawes 1-2 and Godfrey had their lone field goal scoring 2 points.
MDI was led by Andrew Phelps with 10 points. Finn McConomy had 9 points and Drew Shea 8 points. MDI was 7-8 from the free throw line.
Hermon was led by Cody Hawes with a game high 16 points. Garrett Trask had 11 points and Isaac Varney 10 points. The Hawks were 10-15 from the free throw line.
MDI finishes the season at 17-4
Hermon is now a perfect 21-0 and will play Wells, who lost to MDI last year in the State Championship Game on Friday, March 2nd at the Cross Insurance Center for the Gold Ball.
