With no trespassing signs, a letter to the Editor in the Mount Desert Islander and a notice placed in the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce weekly newsletter, Kebo Valley Golf Club is asking the public not to sled and cross country ski on the course in the winter.

This is their message

"Kebo Valley Golf Club has posted “No Trespassing” signs around its property. While we understand that during these times, we all want to get out and enjoy our beautiful island, the golf course is closed for the season and is not a public park.

After a recent snowfall, there were times when over 100 people were gathered near the clubhouse. According to the State of Maine regulations, we would not be allowed to have that many people at the clubhouse even if the business was open and we were on site to manage the guests. These regulations are in place to protect public safety. The property is not continuously staffed in the offseason. Unmonitored gatherings on our private property cannot continue.

Additionally, there have been many examples of people entering sensitive areas that have been roped or fenced off. These areas are cordoned off to prevent damage to valuable resources for our business. Golf green turf can easily be damaged by winter foot traffic. Unfortunately, some have not respected these boundaries.

We ask our fellow businesses to please help us to protect our property during the offseason. Please do not encourage anyone to use the golf course for recreation, whether it be sledding, riding bikes, or even walking dogs. Please respect our “No Trespassing” signs and our private property."
