Thank you to everyone who donated to the SPCA of Hancock County's Feel Better Fund! Miriam and I spent 24 hours at the shelter, from Noon on Saturday, to Noon on Sunday, and thanks to you we collected $1980!

That is an amazing total and it just goes to show the generosity of Downeast Maine! I have been privileged to say on the radio for over 20 years that "Mainers take care of Mainers and those they love" and once again you proved me correct, coming through for the dogs, cats, kittens and puppies at the SPCA of Hancock County!

The Feel Better Fund insures that every animal receives vet care to the utmost of the SPCA of Hancock County's ability. Cost does not determine the veterinary services an animal receives. We saw that first-hand as a dog who has just had 7 puppies and lyme disease has been to the vet multiple times as she couldn't receive treatment while she was nursing her puppies and another dog that had to be taken to the Emergency Vet in Holden on Sunday. In 2025 the SPCA of Hancock County spent close to $70,000 on medical care including spays and neuters, and that's with the discounts they receive!  You can still make a donation to the Feel Better Fund if you wish, by clicking HERE

There are currently 14 dogs available for adoption at the SPCA of Hancock County and they will soon have 7 puppies available for adoption as well! There are lots and lots of cats and kittens available as well! If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an adoption form! Filling one out doesn't obligate you, but it starts the process, so when you find your fur-ever pet, you'll be ready and approved!

Staying over at the SPCA of Hancock County was a very interesting experience. I was amazed at how quiet it was! It was much quieter than my own home at night with 3 dogs and the tv on. Those dogs settled down right after they all had been out, and the animal care staff left for the night.

To wake up in the morning to the sound of peepers was amazing. Living in Bangor, we don't have peepers near us, but when I took Miriam out at 5 a.m. it was such a tranquil moment. If you are lucky enough to have peepers near you, open your windows and truly appreciate the sound.

I also want to tell you how amazing the animal care techs and everyone is, who is working at the SPCA of Hancock County. They truly care about all the dogs, cats, kittens and puppies. It's not a job to them, they pour their hearts and soul into caring for all entrusted to them.

The SPCA of Hancock County is open Tuesday-Saturday noon to 4 to the public. They could use some creamy peanut butter for the dogs and puppies to help with medicine taking. If you donate a jar or two, please make sure it does not contain xylitol!
