Ellsworth Defeats Foxcroft Academy Boys Basketball

The Ellsworth Eagles were looking to get back on the winning ways and to climb back to the .500 mark for the season as they hosted the Foxcroft Academy Ponies on Wednesday, January 22nd at Katsiaficas Gymnasium, and they succeeded defeating Foxcroft 54-36.

Ellsworth came out with defensive pressure, and it was the best that I have seen Ellsworth play defensively all season. Hands were up, balls were deflected and Eagles were diving for the ball. They took a 13-7 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter after being down 5-0. Alex Braley had 5 points in the 1st Quarter for Ellsworth including a 3-pointer. Foxcroft Academy was led by Hunter Smith with 5 points.

In the 2nd Quarter, Ellsworth received 5 points from Bruce St. Peter as their lead stayed at 6 at the half 22-16. Kolby Kendall had 4 points for the Ponies.

In the 3rd Quarter, Ellsworth's defense clamped down, outscoring Foxcroft Academy 17-5 to take a 39-21 lead. Ellsworth's Steven Mahon got white hot, hitting 5 baskets, scoring 11 points, including a 3-pointer. At the end of the 3rd Quarter Ellsworth led 39-21.

In the 4th Quarter Hunter Smith scored 8 more points for Foxcroft Academy and Sam Keane had a 3-pointer. Hunter Law fouled out with 3:28 left in the 4th Quarter, and shortly after that, both teams substituted liberally. Mahon scored 6 more points for Ellsworth in the Quarter.

Ellsworth was led by Steven Mahon with a game high 21 points including a 3-pointer and Bruce St. Peter had 15 points. Alex Braley had a 3-pointer. Ellsworth was 2-3 from the free throw line. Foxcroft Academy was led by Hunter Smith with 18 points, and Kolby Kendall had 7 points. The Ponies were 6-12 from the free throw line.

With the victory, Ellsworth improves to 6-6, and travel to the County this weekend, to play Presque Isle on Friday, January 24 and Caribou, on Saturday, January 25th. The Ellsworth-Presque Isle games will be streamed online at our sister station WOZI 101.9 FM. Foxcroft Academy falls to 3-9 and travels to play the Hermon Hawks on Saturday, January 25th at 7 PM.
