5 Class HS Hoops System Gains Committee Approval
A five class system for Maine high school basketball moved a step closer to reality today when the MPA Classification Committee approved a plan that will now go to the public for feedback.
The committee made some adjustments to the proposal as follows...
Class 1A Schools with enrollment of 825+
Class 2A 545 to 824
Class 3A 325 to 544
Class 4A 121 to 324
Class 5A 0 to 120
The committee also approved a reduction in Heal points differential from one class to another - from current 5 points down to 2 points.(This is for basketball only.)
The current system has 4 classes (A, B, C, D).
The road ahead for the plan looks like this...
-The MPA takes public feedback for the 5 Class plan
- The Classification Committee meets again on February 24th to make a final recommendation
- The full MPA would vote on the plan at its spring meeting set for March 26th and 27th
The current Class B would essentially move to 3A. Teams in the proposed 3A (East or North) would be
Presque Isle, Belfast, MDI, Hermon, Old Town, Winslow, Ellsworth, Mount View, Caribou, John Bapst, Washington Academy, Central High School, Foxcroft Academy, Mattanawcook Academy, Orono and Houlton.
