MDI Wins Gold Ball 59-39 [PHOTOS]
For the first time ever, the MDI Boy’s Basketball Team are the State Champions, winning the Gold Ball on Friday, March 3rd, 2017, defeating the Wells Warriors 59-39 at the Augusta Civic Center.
MDI took a 13-5 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter. MDI’s pressure defense didn’t allow a point until 1:39 remaining in the Quarter when Tyler Dewey drained a 3-pointer for Wells. Cameron Cousins added 2 for the Warriors. For MDI Drew Rich and Graham Good had 3 points each, Aaron Snurkowski had a 3-pointer for 3 points and Andrew Phelps and Riley Swanson each had 2 points.
In the 2nd Quarter, MDI increased their lead to 12 points, outscoring Wells 14-10 and at the end of the 1st Half the Trojans led 27-15. For MDI Andrew Phelps had 6 points, with a 3-pointer. Graham Good had 6 points and Riley Swanson was 2-2 from the free throw line. For Wells, Owen Berry and Tyler Dewey had 3-pointers and Deandre Wood and Cameron Cousins chipped in 2 points each.
In the 3rd Quarter, MDI outscored Wells 16-8 to take a 43-23 lead at the end of the 3rd Quarter. For the Trojans Andrew Phelps had 2 3-pointers, Russell Kropff had a 3-pointer, Gus Reeves had 3 points and Graham Good and Derek Collin each had 2 points. For Wells Owen Berry had 6 points and Tyler Bridge had 2 points.
As time expired MDI’s Jimmy Carroll put an exclamation point on the win, hitting a 3-pointer. Graham Good had 4 points, Riley Swanson was 3-4 from the free throw line and Andrew Phelps and Gus Reeves each had 2 points. For Wells Owen Berry had 5 points with a 3-pointer, Cameron Cousins had 4 points, Christian Saulnier had a 3-pointer and Riley Dempsey and Tyler Dewey each had 2 points.
MDI was led by Andrew Phelps with a game high 16 points. Graham Good had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds as well as 5 steals. The Trojans were 15-20 from the free throw line.
Wells was led by Owen Berry with 14 points. Tyler Dewey and Cameron Cousins each had 8 points. The Warriors were 4-6 from the free throw line.
