Ellsworth Girls Beat Washington Academy
The last time the Ellsworth Girls Basketball Team had a winning record was the 2004-2005 season when they went 14-4. Since then, prior to this year, they have won a combined 8 games in 7 seasons. After last night's victory in East Machias against the Washington Academy Raiders, the Ellsworth Eagles have a record of 7-3!
Ellsworth was playing last night without Emily Berry, Hannah Buzzell and Sydni Palmer who is out for the season with an injured knee. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 7:42 left in the 1st Quarter when Hailee Langley's basket went in and it was 2-0. That was the last time Ellsworth would have the lead until the very end of the game. With 5:30 left Taylor Cushing went 2-2 from the free throw line, and Washington Academy was us 3-2. When Whitney Porter drained a 3 with 4:49 left, it was 6-2 WA. Ellsworth's Annika Firestone's basket with 4:00 left make the score 6-4 and the 1st Quarter ended with Washington Academy up top 10-6. Ellsworth's Morgan Card picked up 2 quick fouls in the first quarter and was forced to the bench.
It was 11-8 was 11-8 WA when Hailee Langley hit a 2 for Ellsworth with 6:07 left. Ellsworth's Kaiti Kinney got Ellsworth to within 1, 11-10 when her basket went in with 5:36 left. But WA's Lauren Raye's basket with 4:59 left made it 13-10 and it was 15-10 WA when Kaitlyn Carl hit a 2 pointer for Washington Academy with 4:00 left in the 1st Half. With 3:48 Kinney scored again for Ellsworth making it 15-12. With 3:15 left Lauren Raye went 1-2 from the free throw line giving Washington Academy a 5 point lead 17-12. Taylor White made 1-2 free throws for Ellsworth with 2:11 left, and Ellsworth's Morgan Card brought Ellsworth to within 2 when she hit a shot with 1:44 left making the score 17-15. WA's Raye answered with a 3 with 1:25 left and wit was 20-15. But Morgan Card scored again with 1:18 left and Taylor White added a bucket with 43 seconds left and the half ended with Washington Academy up 20-19.
The 3rd Quarter started with a 3 pointer for WA's Mackenzie Foss with 7:31 left, and WAS was up 23-19. Taylor Cushing's basket made it 25-19 WA, but Ellsworth's Taylor White answered with a 2 with 6:36 left making it 25-21 WA. WA's Whitney Porter hit a 3 pointer with 5:36 left, giving Washington Academy their largest lead of the night, 30-21. Ellsworth's Langley scored and completed the free throw after being fouled with 5:25 left and the lead was cut to 6, 30-24. It was a 3 point lead 30-27 when Ellsworth's Maddie Card made her shot and free throw after being fouled with 4:55 left in the 3rd Quarter. With 3:41 left, Lauren Raye made two more free throws, going a perfect 4-4 in the 3rd Quarter and WA was up 32-27. But Morgan's Card 2 with 3:13 brought Ellsworth to within 3, 32-29. Taylor White scored the last five points for Ellsworth with less than a minute left in the 3rd Quarter, hitting two field goals and going 1-2 from the foul line, and at the end of 3 Quarters Washington Academy led 37-34.
In the 4th Quarter, Washington Academy would hit 4-4 from the free throw line, but would be unable to score a 2 or 3-pointer. Foss would hit 2 of the Washington Academy free throws with 6:05 left in the 4th Quarter and the score was 39-34 WA. With 5:34 left, Taylor White went 1-2 from the free throw line and it was 39-35. With 5:02 left, Morgan Card hit a 3 pointer for Ellsworth and it was 39-38 WA. Morgan Card hit 1-2 free throws with 3:53 left, and Ellsworth was tied for the first time since 5:30 left in the 1st Quarter. Morgan Card gave Ellsworth the lead 41-39 when she hit a 2 pointer with 3:02 left. But, Raye tied it with 2:36 left hitting 2-2 from the free throw line and it was tied 41-41. Morgan Card then drained a 3 pointer after a Ellsworth time out, and Ellsworth had the lead 44-41 with 26 seconds left in the game, and Ellsworth came away with the victory 44-41

Ellsworth's Morgan Card led all scorers with 15 points, hitting 2 3-pointers on the night, while Lauren Raye scored 13 for the WA Raiders, hitting a 3 pointer and going 6-10 from the free throw line.
Ellsworth improved to 7-3 on the season, while Washington Academy fell to 3-3. Ellsworth's next game is Wednesday January 16th when they will host WA in Katsiaficas Gymnasium. Washington Academy's next game is Thursday January 10 when they host Calais.
