Wardens Seek Information About Bald Eagle Shot In Waterford
In the town of Waterford, on Papoose Pond, A bald eagle was shot, and a few days later died. Now, Maine Game Wardens are looking for answers. In fact, a $1000 reward has been offered for information that leads to an arrest.
Wardens responded to a call on December 26th, saying there was an eagle that was acting strangely. When wardens went to investigate, the eagle was visibly injured, but wardens still couldn't catch the bird, and it escaped. Returning a few days later, wardens found the eagle, but it was very weak and didn't move much, according to a post from WGME-13.
Wardens took the eagle to Avian Haven in Freedom, but sadly, the bird died a few days later. A series of x-rays showed that the poor bird had six pellets in it's wing, leg, and jaw. As a result of it's injuries, it was determined the bird died of starvation.
There are some small birds that can be hunted this time of year, but not bald eagles. Or any time of year for that matter, but it is possible it was a case of mistaken identity. But, if someone is caught, they could face up to a $5000 fine, and less than one year in jail.
Wardens are asking that if anyone has any information that may be helpful, please call Maine Operation Game Thief at 1-800-253-7887 or public safety dispatch in Augusta at (207) 624-7076.
