Hancock County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day Saturday August 28
The Hancock County Planning Commission will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, August 28th. The collection will take place at Ellsworth High School from 9:00 am to 1:00 p.m. This collection will be for
Liquid Materials hazardous waste only! No electronics or other hardware products will be accepted.
The following WILL be accepted
- Paint and Stain
- Turpentine and Varnish
- Brake Fluid and Transmission Fluid
- Paint Thinners and Removers
- Charcoal and Lighter Fluids
- Pool Chemicals
- Anti-Freeze
- Adhesives and Solvents
- Oven/Drain Cleaners
- Fungicides and Herbicides/Pesticides
- Battery Acids and Muriatic Acid
- Linseed Oil
- Automobile Oil and Gas
- Rechargeable Batteries
Materials NOT accepted
- PCs, Laptops, Monitors and Printers
- Televisions and Monitors
- All Electronic Equipment
- Airconditioners
- Ammunition
- Asbestos
- Fireworks and Explosives
- Infectious and Biological Wastes
- Propane Tanks
- Alkaline Batteries
- Car, Lawnmower or Boat Batteries
- Refrigerators, Deep Freezers, etc.
Ellsworth residents can go to Ellsworth City Hall to obtain a permit. Proof of residency is required to obtain a permit.
Other Hancock County residents should check with their municipal office to see about obtaining a permit, and if their individual town/municipality is participating in the collection. (Some towns are covering the costs of their resident's permits).
If a resident of a participating Town shows up at the hazardous waste collection event
without a permit, the resident will be required to show proof of residency and pay $30
per unit (cash or check) to dispose of hazardous materials. If a resident of a
non-participating Town shows up at the hazardous waste collection event, they will be
required to pay $45 per unit to dispose of materials
