Sumner Memorial High School Honor Parts
Principal Ty Thurlow has announced the members of the Class of 2018 who have earned academic distinction as they graduate from Sumner Memorial High School. They are members of the first Sumner Memorial High School class graduating with a Proficiency-Based Diploma. Graduation will be held on Thursday, June 7th.

Andrea Knapp - Summa Cum Laude
Andrea Knapp, who has achieved Summa Cum Laude distinction, and is the class Valedictorian, is the daughter of Kip and Patti Knapp of Franklin. She has been a member of the Sumner Music Department participating in Show Choir. Knapp was the recipient of the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Achievement Award and numerous individual class awards. She was a four-year member of the girls’ volleyball team. Knapp plans to attend the University of Maine in the fall.

Madeline Bierman - Magna Cum Laude
Madeline Bierman, achieving Magna Cum Laude distinction, and is the class Salutatorian, is the daughter of Dan and Brenda Bierman of Sorrento. She is a member and president of the National Honor Society, as well as the recipient of the Maine Principals Award representing Sumner Memorial High School. Bierman was the recipient of the University of Rochester’s, George Eastman Young Leaders’ Award along with several individual class academic awards. She has be a member of soccer, basketball and softball teams during her high school career. Bierman plans to study International Affairs at the University of Maine in the fall.

Samantha Bagley - Magna Cum Laude
Also achieving Magna Cum Laude distinction, Samantha Bagley is the daughter of Troy and Dondi Bagley of Sullivan. She has been an active member of the music department during her high school career, participating in Show Choir and the fall musicals. Bagley is the recipient of the Sage College Student Sage Award as well as several individual class awards. She has been a member of the girls’ volleyball team for four years. She will be attending Husson University in the fall

Thiraphon Janla - Cum Laude
Thiraphong Janla, who has attained Cum Laude distinction, is the son of Matthew and Chutimon Johnson of Winter Harbor. He is a member and treasurer of the National Honor Society and an active member of the Music Department participating in Show Choir and the fall musical. Janla is the recipient of the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award. He has participated in soccer, as well as Indoor and Outdoor Track. He will be attending the University of Southern Maine this fall.

Warren Higgins - Cum Laude
Warren Higgins, son of Luke and Christie Higgins of Sullivan, has earned Cum Laude distinction. He has been a member and captain of the school Math Team in the Downeast Math League. He has also participated in Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor Track. He will be entering the University of Maine in the fall pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
