Remembering Mainers Who Died This Memorial Day
This Memorial Day weekend, while we are enjoying a long three day weekend, it's only right and proper to pause and give thanks to all those who gave their life in service of our country, and also to remember those who they left behind. Words can't express our thanks for defending the freedoms which we all take for granted.
I found these very interesting numbers from the State of Maine website.
In World War I, there were 4,734,991 US service members, there were 35,061 Mainers that served, and 1,026 died. Of the 1,026 that died, 279 were killed in action, and 120 died of wounds.
In World War II, there were 16,112,566 US service members! Of that, there were 112,962 Mainer's that served, and 2.551 died, including 1,664 who were killed in action, and 205 who died of wounds.
In the Korean War, there were 5,720,000 US service members. Of that, there were 40,099 Mainer's that served and 241 died, including 154 who were killed in action and 29 who died of wounds. There were 18 who died while captured, and 32 died while missing.
