National Weather Service Issues Cold Water Safety Message for Memorial Day Weekend
The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazard Statement and a Cold Water Safety Message for Memorial Day Weekend for Downeast Maine.
The weather this weekend is going to be delightful, with sunny skies and temperatures in the 70's and 80's on Saturday and Sunday.. However, that may cause people to severely underestimate the temperatures of the lakes, rivers and ocean which are still in the lower 50's.
The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia! The Maine Warden Service reminds all that when the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average person in the water can lose dexterity within minutes. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if on the water this weekend to use extreme caution and avoid this threat!
Paddle smart from the strt and always wear your life jacket!
