July 20 1969 Moon Landing [VIDEO]
Today marks the 51st Anniversary of man’s first landing on the moon. It’s funny, because I know exactly where I was. I was at Yankee Stadium with my father, watching the Yankees playing the Washington Senators. They stopped the game, and had a moment of silence as they had announced that Apollo 11 had successfully landed on the moon.
It was 4:18 PM, when Neil Armstrong radioed to mission control ” Houston, Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed”.
Then, I remember that my parents woke up my brother, sister and I as we watched Neil Armstrong take man’s first steps on the moon. It was 10:56 PM and we were watching on a black and white television. Armstrong’s first words as he walked on the moon were “That’s one small step for man, one giant step for mankind”. Neil Armstrong was accompanied on the moon by Buzz Aldrin, and Mike Collins was the command module pilot who stayed in orbit while Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the moon.
Apollo 11 was launched on July 16, 1969, and was the culmination of the space race between the United States and Russia
