4 People Injured in an Explosion and Fire at an Orland Home

Four people were sent to the hospital after a fire and explosion at an Orland home on Friday.

Where Was the Fire?

It was just before 9:30 Friday morning when the Orland Fire Department was called to a single-family home with an attached garage at 102 Soper Road in Orland. Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says there had been an explosion, as well as a fire that was consuming the house.

How Badly Were People Injured?

Four adults were in the home, at the time of the fire, including the two homeowners and two of their friends. One person was transported via LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The other three people were taken to EMMC by ambulance, one with serious injuries, and the other two with minor injuries.

A Newfoundland dog named Zeus ran from the scene while wearing an orange vest. The Orland Fire Department posted a picture of the dog and put out a plea on the department's Facebook page for local residents to keep an eye open for the dog who they said was likely very scared. An update a few hours later indicated that Zeus had been found safe.

What Caused the Explosion?

Investigators with the State Fire Marshal's Office responded to the scene to begin an investigation into what may have started the fire. An initial investigation suggests that this was a propane leak and explosion. Investigators will be looking into what was leaking and what ignited the propane.

The property is considered a total loss.
