Free Family Friendly Things to Do Downeast July 8-14
Summer in Maine seems to go incredibly quickly! Here's a list of free family friendly things to do in Downeast Maine July 8-14 to keep your children busy, without killing your bank account!
Remember the Splash Pad at Knowlton Park in Ellsworth is open daily 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It's a great way to cool off when the temperatures soar!
The public pool in Northeast Harbor is open for public swim Monday-Friday 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturday Noon to 2 p.m. For more info, please call the Neighborhood House at 276-5039.
Monday July 8
- Bar Harbor - The Bar Harbor Town Band performs every Monday and Thursday nights from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the Village Green. In the event of inclement weather they will perform at the Congregational Church next to the Village Green.
Tuesday July 9
- Ellsworth - Ellsworth Public Library - Music Rocks 10:30 - 11 a.m. Music Rocks is a weekly parent-and-child music and early literacy group this summer. The group is geared towards ages 2-6, but children of all ages and abilities who are accompanied by adult caregivers are welcome.
- Bar Harbor - Jesup Memorial Library - Story and Play from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.
- Ellsworth - Ellsworth Public Library - Riverside Family Scientists - Nature Journaling 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. Join Maine Outdoor School and Frenchman Bay Conservancy for Riverside Family Scientists: a series of interactive nature-based science activities at the library. Each week will feature a different topic: pollinators, birds, insects, and more. Registration is required! Please register online. Registration is per individual event
Wednesday July 10
- Southwest Harbor - Southwest Harbor Public Library - Baby Storytime 10:00 - 10:30 a.m. Join Amanda for stories, songs, rhymes, books, bubbles and more. Baby Storytime is designed especially for babies under 2 years.
- Bar Harbor - Jesup Memorial Library is hosting a Block Party 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Kids are welcome to join the Jesup's library staff on Wednesday afternoons to build something awesome with the library’s Lego collection
- Bar Harbor - Jesup Memorial Library is hosting Chronicles of Yarnia: Fiber Arts Group for Tweens and Teens from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tweens and teens in grades 5-12 are welcome to bring a fiber arts project or start a new project at the library.
- Ellsworth - Ellsworth Public Library - The Silver Circus with Andrew Silver 6 p.m - 7 p.m. Join Andrew Silver for a magical experience filled with wonder and laughter. Perfect for the whole family
- Ellsworth - Ellsworth Concert Band Set up and practice is from 6 - 7 p.m. with the performance from 7 to 7:40 p.m. at Harbor Park on the Ellsworth Waterfront.
Thursday July 11
- Ellsworth - Ellsworth Public Library - Family Storytime 10:30 - 11:15 a.m. Join the Library's story time for children aged 2 through 5 and their parents or caregivers featuring stories, songs, fingerplays, rhymes, and crafts
- Northeast Harbor - Northeast Harbor Library - Storytime on the Lawn - 10:30-11 a.m. Join Lauren on the library lawn for songs, play and stories. Stories will be geared toward children Pre K - Grade 3 but all ages are welcome.
- Ellsworth - Ellsworth Public Library - Ukulele Camp - This is the 1st in a 6-week series. (If you sign up you sign for the entire 6 week series!) Learn chords and strum along to some favorite songs with Miss Jean. Ages 8 and up. No experience is necessary. Ukuleles will be provided!
- Bar Harbor - Jesup Memorial Library - Bracelet Day - It's an afternoon of bracelet making! Kids 5 and up are welcome to attend from 4 to 6 p.m.
- Ellsworth - Ellsworth Public Library - Concert: Daryne Rockett and Heather MacLeod Celtic Duo 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Join Heather and Daryne for an unforgettable concert featuring dynamic Maine-based Celtic music!

Friday July 12
- Ellsworth - Ellsworth Public Library - Baby Story and Play 9 - 9:30 a.m. The play after the program ends.
- Southwest Harbor - Southwest Harbor Public Library 10 -10:30 a.m. Family Storytime Join Ms. Chrissy for a fun-filled interactive storytime with books, puppets, movements, songs, and more!
- Ellsworth - Ellsworth Public Library - Cryptid Crafts for Teens 3 - 4 p.m. Get inspired by your favorite cryptids and create unique crafts at this special event!
All materials will be provided, so just bring your imagination and get ready for some mythical fun. - Ellsworth - Ellsworth Public Library - Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet 5:00 - 6 p.m. Enjoy a night of sophisticated jazz with the Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet's innovative performances!
- Ellsworth - Ellsworth Waterfront Concert Series ! Concerts take place at Harbor Park starting at 6 p.m. Jessi Mallory - The Elvis Story will perform on July 12th. In the event of inclement weather the concert will take place on Sunday, July 14h at 4 p.m.
- Milbridge - Free Summer Concert at the Milbridge Theatre Outdoor Stage located at the Milbridge Town Marina. From 6:30 to 8 p.m. the Whiskey Bent Band performs on July 12th.
- Eastbrook - Eastbrook Fire Department is offering a free movie outdoors at 7:45 p.m. This week it's Encanto
Saturday July 13
- Southwest Harbor - Flamingo Festival
- Bar Harbor - Story Time and Craft at Dawnland Festival 10:30-11:30 a.m. Join the Jesup at the Abbe Museum's Dawnland Festival of Arts and Ideas. This will take place at the College of the Atlantic. Abby will read a story and everyone will create a woven bookmark inspired by Penobscot artist Paula Love Thorne. This program is recommended for children ages 3-10.
- Trenton - Trenton Butterfly Festival 3 - 5 p.m.The festival will take place at the fire pond behind the Trenton Town Office (rain date July 20). The event will feature a pollinator parade, a raffle, children’s activities, live monarch butterflies, and educational stations. Participants of all ages are encouraged to dress up in their best pollinator costumes and march in a colorful procession.A suggested donation of $5 includes entrance and 1 raffle ticket. Funds will help support our work to restore habitat and to raise awareness in our community about the importance of butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.
