Summer is here and schools are out. We are going to try and keep a list of FREE, family friendly, events that are going on in the Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island area, which will be published weekly on the WDEA website. Here is a list of free events that are occurring August 5th - 11th and includes the free family friendly movies in Bar Harbor on Wednesday, August 7th and in Ellsworth  on Thursday, August 8th as well as the Bar Harbor and Ellsworth Town Band concerts

While this is not a comprehensive list, it's what I have been able to find by talking to the Chambers of Commerce, Public Libraries and events that I'm generally aware of. If you would like to have your FREE event listed, please email it to me in advance at chris.popper@townsquaremedia.com

Monday August 5
Ellsworth - 9AM - 12Noon. Computer Class: Doing More with Google - Ellsworth Public Library .Get the most out of your Gmail account and start using google Drive and Docs. Computers will be available. You don’t need to bring a laptop or purchase software to attend. Led by Chris Suggs of the National Digital Equity Center. Approximate class size is 5 participants. Pre-registration is recommended by calling 207-667-6363 or signing up at the library circulation desk.

Southwest Harbor -10AM Let's Read with Deanna Aguinaga-Whyte - Southwest Harbor Public Library - Perk up your ears and open your hearts. New resident to MDI Deanna Whyte will share her favorite stories to ages 5-7, with books ranging from Susan Verde’s ‘I Am Human’ to Jo Witek’s ‘In My Heart: The Book Of Feelings’. This story time explores our young emotional hearts and how we speak to them. We will also explore beginning yoga poses that align with our books. Don’t miss this fun group read

Northeast Harbor - 10:30 AM Northeast Harbor Library - Children's Concert with Deborah Fortier. Fortier of the Bar Harbor Music Festival encourages kids to move to the music, improvise and invent a story from sound.

Southwest Harbor - 2-4 PM Southwest Harbor Public Library - Get help with basic computer tasks such as setting up email accounts, transferring photos, completing online forms, attaching photos to emails, scanning document, creating and using documents in Word, Excel, Access, Google Drive etc. Laptop users are encouraged to bring their own computer. Registration is recommended for a 1 on 1 half hour session. Call 244-7065

Ellsworth - 3-6PM Free Meal served at the Episcopal Church on State Street across from the Moore School

Ellsworth - 2-3 PM- Ellsworth Public Library - Once Upon A Sign. Join the Ellsworth Public Library summer intern Michelle for interactive stories and songs that incorporate American Sign Language. Learn ASL vocabulary while having fun and signing along. Recommended for ages 0-5 years.

Bar Harbor - 8PM Village Green - Bar Harbor Town Band. The 11th concert of the 2019 Summer Season (Rain Location - Congregational Church bordering the Village Green)

Tuesday August 6
Ellsworth - 10:30-11:30 AM - Ellsworth Public Library - Across the Universe Family Music Program. Back for the 2nd summer, this free family music group is for children and parents. There will be singing, dancing and playing of instruments all while working on early literacy and social skills. The class is geared towards kids 3-6 but all ages and abilities are welcome
Northeast Harbor - 10:30AM - Northeast Harbor Public Library - Toddler Storytime

Northeast Harbor 4-5PM - Northeast Harbor Public Library - Lego Hour

Bar Harbor - 4-7PM. Free Community Meal with entertainment. Prepared by Open Table MDI. Served at Bar Harbor Congregational Church on Mount Desert Street.

Southwest Harbor 5:30-7PM Digital Archive Presentation with George Soules - Southwest Harbor Public Library - Enquiring Minds Want to Know! "Discover the History that Connects Us" with George Soules. Library trustee and software architect George Soules will talk about how to use the Library’s online Digital Archive to learn about the history of Southwest Harbor and Mount Desert Island. He’ll demonstrate how to use the Digital Archive to find what you are looking for and discover things you never knew!

Bar Harbor - 7 -8PM - Theda Skocpol Talk with Acadia Senior College and the League of Women Voters- Jesup Memorial Library. Skocpol is the Victor S. Thomas Professor of Government and Sociology at Harvard University. At Harvard, she has served as Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (2005-2007) and as Director of the Center for American Political Studies (2000-2006). In 1996, Skocpol served as President of the Social Science History Association, an interdisciplinary professional group, and in 2002-03, she served as President of the American Political Science Association during the centennial of this leading professional body. In 2007, she was awarded the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science for her “visionary analysis of the significance of the state for revolutions, welfare, and political trust, pursued with theoretical depth and empirical evidence.”

- 10- 10:45 AM Southwest Harbor Public Library - Toddler Story-time. Designed for children 3 -5 but all are welcome. Join the Children's Library staff in songs, simple sign language and interactive short stories.

Ellsworth - 10-11:30 AM Ellsworth Public Library . Summer of LEGO. The weekly summer LEGO group is back. Come build something awesome! Children 3 and up are welcome to attend. Children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult. There will be LEGO bricks for little builders and regular bricks for everyone else. Not sure what to build? There will be weekly space themed challenges!

Ellsworth - 12Noon -1PM - The Joy$ of Thrift - Ellsworth Public Library - Join others who are looking for ways to save money, stretch the budget and share frugal ideas. Please feel free to bring your lunch. Coffee and tea will be provided.

Bar Harbor - 6:30-7:30 PM  Author Talk and Book Signing: Ann Rutherfurd Austin “The Bar Harbor Formation” Jesup Memorial Library - A privileged childhood among the dying embers of the Gilded Age is not the best preparation for a young woman coming of age at the second half of the twentieth century. The world Katie Bowman Morse has been trained for-the world of Emily Post, dinner parties, and marriage as a career-is rapidly changing. Soon she will have to find her footing at a time of massive cultural shifts: the Viet Nam War, the civil rights movement, hippies, feminists, and, perhaps most difficult of all, the relaxation of the norms her family held dear. Ellsworth - 6PM Ellsworth Public Library - The Ellsworth Chess Club, hosted by Dick Powell meets weekly on Thursday. Visitors and new people are welcome.Bar Harbor - 6-8PM Jesup Memorial Library- Get Your Knit On! Knitters meet every Thursday 6-8PM to knit, share/trade yards, talk knitting and have fun.

Southwest Harbor - 6-7 PM Southwest Harbor Public Library- Nancy Drew Mystery! Nancy Drew and the Mystery of the Torn Will, a play by local mom, Courtney Schusheim will be performed by guest artists from Barn Arts. The play is an interactive mystery that travels throughout the library and asks the kids to solve the mystery.

Ellsworth 7-8PM Summertime Delights - Maine St. Andrews Pipe and Drums - Ellsworth Public Library Join  the Maine St. Andrews Pipe and Drums for a stirring evening of music on the lawn at the Ellsworth Public Library. They will play a wide variety of music and talk a little about the instruments, the music and the uniform.

Bar Harbor - 8PM Village Green - Bar Harbor Town Band. The 13th concert of the 2019 Summer Season (Rain Location - Congregational Church bordering the Village Green)

Ellsworth 8PM - Knowlton Park Free Summer Movie "Incredibles 2" While the Parr family has accepted its collective calling as superheroes, the fact remains that their special heroism is still illegal. After they are arrested after unsuccessfully trying to stop the Underminer, their future seems bleak. However, the wealthy Deavor siblings of Devtech offer new hope with a bold project to rehabilitate the public image and legal status of Supers, with Elastigirl being assigned on point to be the shining example. Now having agreed for now to stay at home to care of the kids, Mr. Incredible finds domestic life a daunting challenge, especially with baby Jack-Jack’s newly emerged powers making him almost impossible to manage. However, Elastigirl soon has her own concerns dealing with the menace of a new supervillain, Screenslaver, who is wreaking havoc with his mind control abilities. Now, Elastigirl must solve the mystery of this enemy, who has malevolent designs on the world with the Parr family and friends key targets of this evil.

Southwest Harbor - 10-11AM Southwest Harbor Public Library - Baby Story time. Susan Michalski and Amanda Crafts welcome babies with songs, rhymes and short stories. Baby Storytime is designed especially for babies under 2 years but older siblings are invited.

Ellsworth 6-7:30 PM Waterfront Concert- Harbor Park 413 Water Street "Danny Harper Band" Danny Harper is one of Maine’s remaining true Traditionalists and is reflected in the many songs he writes and records. He first began singing and writing Country Music back in the 1960’s with his own weekly TV show in the 1970’s, his Nashville recordings in the 1980’s, which spawned the hit, “Uncle Clyde” to his latest Tribute to Veteran’s which is a part of every show! His recent recording, “We Stand” has become one of his most popular writings to date! Danny Harper, the man and his music, along with his incredible band guarantee you some of Maine’s finest entertainment!

Saturday August 10
Ellsworth - 9AM -9:45AM Ellsworth Public Library -Baby Story and Play.for newborns to 3 year olds. Join Miss Cheryl for a story and sing some favorite songs followed by informal playtime. A great opportunity for parents to connect and the kids to play

Bar Harbor - 9-10AM Jesup Memorial Library - Write On! Writer's Group. Writer's Group for all levels and genres. Come prepared to read your work and critique the work of your fellow writers.

Southwest Harbor - 9:30 - 12:30PM Southwest Harbor Public Library. Every Saturday from 9:30 to 12:30 get help with basic computer tasks such as setting up an email account, transferring photos, attaching photos to emails, completing online forms, scanning documents, creating and using documents in Word, Excel, Access, Google Drive etc. Laptop users are encouraged to bring their own computer. Ellsworth - 10 - 12 Noon, Ellsworth Public Library. HCGS - Hancock County Genealogical Society. - Meetings are held the second Saturday of each month; they are free and newcomers are welcome.

The restroom facilities are open from 8AM to 9 PM. The changing rooms at Knowlton Park are open as well. Water in the Splash Pad will operate between 10AM and 8PM, everyday, unless the temperature falls below 65, which it will then automatically shut off until the temperature rises again.

Looking for somewhere that's kid friendly and FREE in Bar Harbor to cool off? The place to go is the Glen Mary Wading Pool! The Pool has a maximum depth of 2 feet and is open daily from 10AM to 8 PM. There is no lifeguard on duty, and children under 10 need to be accompanied by someone 14 and over. Pets are not allowed in the fenced in area. Food and beverage is allowed but not in the water. There are changing facilities

 

The Glen Mary Wading Pool is located at 11 Waldren Road. The easiest way to get there is to go on Park Street and go past the YMCA and cross Ledgelawn Avenue. At the end of the road turn right onto Glen Mary Road. At the end of the road turn left onto Waldren Road.
