Local area high schoolers are hard at work this summer, working on their athletic skills. We have featured basketball stories, and today, it's softball! There has been a combined Ellsworth Under 18 Team that's had great success, and have been playing in ASA Tourneys as well as in a Wednesday Night League in Brewer, coached by Rick Roberts, the Ellsworth Girl's Softball Coach.

The Ellsworth U-18 teams is comprised of girls from four schools. Ellsworth - Delaney Sargent (Shortstop), Courtney Wasson (2nd Base), Caitlin Bean (Pitcher, 1st Base), Megan Hunt (Pitcher, Outfield), Callie Hammer (Catcher, 3rd Base) and Paxton Colley (Outfield). Mount Desert Island - Molly Carroll (3rd Base), Shelby O'Neil (Catcher) and Haley Littlefield (Pitcher and Outfield). George Steven's Academy - Adrianna Simmons (Pitcher and Outfield) and Washington Academy - Kassidy Seeley (Pitcher and Outfield).

The Ellsworth U-18 went 2-2 in the Brewer Invitational Tournament July 12-14, and that set them up for the Old Town Canoe Classic July 27-28.

The Ellsworth U-18 teams played Messalonskee Saturday, July 27th at 8 AM. It was a pitching duel between Kassidy Seeley from Ellsworth and the Messalonskee pitcher. Ellsworth scored the only run in the game in the 6th inning. Kassidy Seeley singled and moved to second on a groundout. With two outs, Shelby O'Neil singled up the middle to score Kassidy and give Ellsworth the win 1-0. Messalonskee was the reigning champions of the tourney. Kassidy Seeley pitched a 1 hitter, striking out 13 players.

Ellsworth then played a very tough Old Town teams at 10 AM, winning the game 5-4. Ellsworth scored 3 in the 1st inning and 2 in the 2nd inning to take a 5-0 lead. Haley Littlefield and Kassidy Seeley combined for the win. Ellsworth had 5 runs on 10 hits, but made 3 errors. Delaney Sargent was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI's and scored 2 runs. Shelby O'Neil was 3-4 with 2 doubles and a single and drove in 2 runs. Haley Littlefield had 2 singles, as did Caitlin Bean, and Megan Hunt had a single.

The two wins kept Ellsworth in the Winner's Bracket, and advanced them to the Championship Round on Sunday. Ellsworth played Old Town again, who had beaten Messalonskee 2-0 to knock them out. Old Town would need to beat Ellsworth twice to win the Tourney, while a single Ellsworth victory would give them the win.

Old Town took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Ellsworth Girls went to work, scoring 8 runs! In the inning, Molly Carroll had a triple, Shelby O'Neil a double and Caitlin Bean, Adrianna Simmons, Courtney Wasson and Kassidy Seeley all had singles. The final score was 8-3 and Ellsworth was the Champion! The combined pitching and great defense by the Ellsworth team led them to victory!

Congratulations to all, and thanks to Rick Roberts for sending the information so we could post it on the website!
