The history of Ellsworth isn't complete without mentioning "The Fire". Unfortunately there isn't anyone alive anymore who can give a first hand account of the fire in 1933 that destroyed 130 homes and buildings.

The fire, deliberately set by arsonist Norman Moore on Sunday, May 7, 1933 caused 1.2 million dollars. Adjusting for inflation, those 1933 dollars are worth 21.6 million dollars today! Mutual aid came as far away as Bangor, Old Town, Brewer as well as Belfast, Blue Hill, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Bar Harbor.
