James Smith, the City of Brewer Assistant City Manager will be appointed Bar Harbor's newest Town Manager at the Tuesday, October 17th, Council Meeting.

Smith has been the Brewer Assistant City Manager since January 2014. He previously held manager positions in Rockland and Oakfield. A Marine Corps veteran, he holds a degree in Public Administration from the University of Maine.

“We’re excited to have found a manager with so much experience working in Maine municipal government,” Council Chair Valerie Peacock said. “Brewer’s proximity means that James has spent time in Bar Harbor and Acadia and has some understanding of our strengths and our challenges.”

Smith will be starting full-time November 13, 2023 to lead the budget process. He will succeed long-time Bar Harbor Town Manager Cornell Knight who has been Acting Town Manager and Finance Director Sarah Gilbert who was the previous Acting Town Manager. Bar Harbor has been without a permanent Town Manager since January 2023 when former Manager Kevin Sutherland resigned
