If You Live on MDI Be Bear Aware
There have been more and more sightings of bears on Mount Desert Island and the surrounding towns, and officials are asking that we share the following tips to safely coexist with the bears!
- Store trash securely in bear-resistant containers or indoors.
- Never leave pet foot, bird seed, or coolers outside unattended.
- Clean grills after each use and store them in a secure area.
- Always leash your dog, especially in Acadia National Park and on local trails.
- Carry bear spray while hiking and know how to use it.
- Never approach or feed a bear - stay at least 50 yards away.
- If you see bear activity, alert neighbors and report concerns appropriately. If you see a bear in Acadia National Park, alert a Park Ranger and if on the Island, alert your local police department or the Maine Game Wardens.
- If driving and you see a bear, watch for cubs. Bears rarely travel alone. Be especially careful at dawn and dusk when bears are most active.
- If a bear approaches you, back away slowly. Never run, as this may trigger a chase response.
- If a bear makes contact with you do NOT play dead, fight back aggressively.

LOOK: Cool Car Features We Kind of Miss
Kids these days don't know what they're missing out on! But hey, let's be real, some of those old car features were pretty awesome. Yeah, they might've been a bit risky and even tried to kill us, but they made our rides feel way cooler.
