Do you have a fire hydrant near your home or business? If so have you considered adopting it? It may sound silly, but by clearing the snow and ice away from the fire hydrant, you may help save your house or building in case of a fire.

"Every second counts in a fire," said Scott Guillerault, Fire Chief of the Ellsworth Fire Department. "Clearing snow from around fire hydrants can significantly reduce the time it takes for firefighters to access a critical water source."

You can help your local fire department, water department and public works department if you  clear a 3-foot perimeter around fire hydrants near your home or businesses. This includes removing snow from all sides of the hydrant and ensuring a clear path from the street.

How to adopt a hydrant:

  1. Locate a fire hydrant near your home or business.
  2. Clear a 3-foot radius around the hydrant, removing snow from all sides.
  3. Ensure a clear path from the street to the hydrant.
  4. Consider clearing the hydrant after each snowfall throughout the remainder of the winter.
Safety Tips:
  • Wear warm clothing and sturdy footwear when clearing snow.
  • Be aware of traffic and avoid standing in the street.
  • Do not use tools that could damage the hydrant.
  • If you notice any damage to a hydrant, please report it to the Ellsworth Fire Department at 207-667-8666 or to your local Fire Department.

"By adopting a hydrant, you’re not just clearing snow," said Chief Guillerault. "You’re helping to protect your community and ensure the safety of your neighbors."
