Acadia National Park’s Carriage Roads Have Reopened to Foot Traffic
Acadia National Park has announced that the Carriage Roads have reopened to foot traffic only effective Tuesday, April 22nd.
The Carriage Roads in Acadia National Park were closed effective Tuesday, March 18th, until further notice. The warmer weather and wet conditions have softened the carriage roads in Acadia National Park and made them susceptible to damage. Walking, biking and horse riding on the carriage roads under the current conditions can cause ruts and potholes that will channel water and exacerbate erosion.
While they are now open to foot traffic, they remain closed for biking and horse riding until further notice.
As a reminder, effective April 15th, if you head to Acadia National Park at one of their entrance stations, you'll need to have a credit card, debit card, mobile payment or have pre-purchased a pass to enter the Park.
The move to go cashless is intended to reduce the amount of time park staff spend managing cash and increase their availability to collect fees, increasing the amount of fee revenue available to support critical projects and visitor services.
Visitors who are only able to pay with cash may purchase a park pass from the following third-party vendors:
- Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, 2 Cottage Street, Bar Harbor
- Gouldsboro Town Office, 59 Main St, Prospect Harbor
- Jordan Pond Gift Shop, 2928 Park Loop Road, Seal Harbor (open seasonally)
- Mount Desert Town Office, 21 Sea Street, Northeast Harbor
- Mount Desert Chamber of Commerce, 42 Harbor Drive, Northeast Harbor (open seasonally)
- Schoodic Institute Welcome Center, 1 Atterbury Circle, Winter Harbor (open seasonally)
- Southwest Harbor & Tremont Chamber of Commerce, 329 Main Street, Southwest Harbor (open seasonally)
- Tremont Town Office, 20 Harbor Drive, Bass Harbor
- Winter Harbor Town Office, 20 School St, Winter Harbor
There are 4 fee-free days between April 22nd and December 31st, where you do not have to purchase a park pass to enter Acadia National Park. Those days are
- Thursday, June 19 — Juneteenth National Independence Day
- Monday, August 4 — Anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act
- Saturday, September 27 — National Public Lands Day
- Tuesday, November 11 — Veterans Day
