The 2022 and last Hancock County Relay for Life took place, Saturday, June 4th at Del Luce Stadium in Ellsworth. From young to old, runners to those in wheelchairs circled the track on Saturday afternoon, united in the effort to raise money to defeat cancer.

We all know someone who has had, or has cancer. It's a terrible disease. I am lucky, I am a 2-time survivor. It is why I always try and attend Relay for Life events. I remember the first time I walked in a Survivor's Lap, and I didn't make it a quarter of the way around the track before tears were pouring from my eyes. Even as I write this, I have tears.

One of the best things about Relay for Life is that you see the same people year after year. You get to catch up, see how they are doing. At the same time one of the worst things about Relay for Life is that you see who isn't there, those who have lost their battle with this killer.

The mood was upbeat early Saturday afternoon. Bill daButler had the music cranking and people were moving to the beat. Later Saturday night, as darkness comes, luminarias will be lit around the track. The luminarias will be in honor of those who are fighting and in memory of those who have passed. It is an amazing sight!
