Thanks to Ellsworth Wresting Coach Jim Burns for providing the following report!

For the first time in the history of Ellsworth High School, the wrestling team is the regional champion. Despite winning 2 state titles in the early 80s, Ellsworth was never able to capture a regional championship. On Saturday, Ellsworth outdistanced fellow PVC rival Foxcroft Academy by a score of 166 to 155.

At the beginning of the season I believed that we had the finest group of middleweight wrestlers of any team in the state of Maine. At regionals and over the next several weeks they have the opportunity to reaffirm my belief. However, for me, the nicest comment to come out of the regional tournament was made by the meet director, Sean Keenan. He said to me, “ You have an excellent group of wrestlers but more importantly you have a fine group of young men.”

In the 152 lb. weight class, junior captain Connor Petros convincing win over Foxcroft’s two time state champion, Brooks Law, put the team on the brink of a championship and 160 lb. Trent Goodman “sealed the deal” with a first period pin of MDI’s Wilder Young.

With 14 weight classes, Ellsworth entered only 10 wrestlers. Each one contributed to the victory as all 10 placed in the top 4 of their respective weight class.  They will now advance to the state championships in Fryeburg on the 14th.
