Crews Still Working on Rte 9 Crash That Destroyed a Truck, 6 Cars

Officials say Route 9 in Amherst is back open after a fiery crash that closed a portion of the Airline Road for nearly 12 hours.

Where is the Scene of the Crash?

The Hancock County Sheriff's Office says the crash happened at around 7:20 Friday morning on Route 9, also known as the Airline Road, in Amherst. Seraphin Puccetti of Baltimore Maryland was driving a 2023 Western Star tractor and trailer east when the rig went off the right side of the roadway. It traveled down an embankment and hit several trees before coming to rest on its side. The truck caught fire, destroying it and all six of the brand new cars that it was carrying. Puccetti was not hurt in the crash. What caused the driver to go off the road remains under investigation.

How Long Will the Road Be Closed?

Just after 7:00 pm Friday, the Hancock County Sheriff's Office reported that the road was back open. It was closed for nearly 12 hours while crews dealt with removing the tractor trailer, as well as the six cars the truck had been carrying.
