An 18-year-old Stonington man is facing charges after allegedly causing one accident before losing control of his own vehicle a few minutes later.

The accident happened just after 7:00 Saturday evening. According to the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, 18-year-old Jared Murphy of Stonington was driving his pickup east on Route 182 when he tried to pass an SUV, driven by 52-year-old Julie Schaul of Chicago, Illinois. As he started to pass, he noticed an oncoming vehicle and tried to pull back abruptly, sending Schaul's vehicle off the road. Her vehicle traveled down a driveway and ran into a parked car. Schaul and her juvenile daughter were treated for minor injuries.

Murphy didn't stop after the accident and continued into Franklin. After roughly five miles, he lost control of his vehicle and left the road, traveling into a field and rolling over several times. Murphy was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken by ambulance to Northern Light Maine Coast Memorial Hospital for treatment of potentially life-threatening injuries.

Officials say charges are pending and speed and alcohol are believed to have been factors in the crashes.

The Hancock County Sheriff's Department was assisted at the two scenes by fire department personnel from Franklin, Hancock, and Sullivan, as well as Capital Ambulance.
