The Boston Red Sox picked up a right-handed bat Saturday night trading promising left-hander Connelly Early to the Washington Nationals for infielder Curtis Mead.

Mead, who is 25 ranks int 10th among qualified right-handers in slugging percentage (.500). He has played in 87 games for the Natonals and is batting .254 with 17 doubles, 1 triple, 17 home runs and 48 runs batted in. He has started 42 games at 3rd base, 19 at 1st base and 1 at 2nd base. In 16 games in July he has batted .367 with 6 double, 1 triple, 3 home runs and 9 runs batted in.

Early is 7-5 for the Red Sox this year with a .344 ERA. He has 93 strikeouts in 17 starts. He was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 1st with left elbow inflammation.
